Thomas Surlas Obituary

Thomas J. "Tom" Surlas ,75, passed away peacefully at his residence, Norvelt, Pa. on January 4, 2026. Born on July 19, 1950, in Mt. Pleasant, Pennsylvania, the son of the late John J. and Valeria A. Lewandowski Surlas. Tom's life was one marked by dedication to his family, his faith, and his community. Tom was a proud graduate of Southmoreland High School's Class of 1968, where he set a record in Shot Put that still stands to this day, a testament to his athletic prowess and determination. His athletic talents earned him a spot at the University of Alabama, where he shone as an All-American Linebacker, embodying the team spirit and discipline that would characterize much of his life. After his collegiate career, he continued to nurture his love for the sport by serving as a youth football coach in his hometown of Mt. Pleasant, shaping the lives of young athletes with his experience and passion for the game. A man of deep faith, Tom was a longtime and faithful member of the Partner Parish of St. Joseph R.C. Church in Everson. His voice was a staple in the church choir, where he uplifted many with his harmonious praises over the years. His commitment to his faith was unwavering, and he lived his life as a testament to the values he held dear. Tom's love for his community was further reflected in his active membership in the Polish American Club of Everson and the Norvelt Citizens Club. More recently, Tom enjoyed sitting in his chair watching the wildlife in his yard while reflecting. He loved all of his dogs, especially Chickie, who went everywhere with him. In his personal life, Tom was a devoted family man. He is survived by his beloved companion of 23 years, Linda Kowalewski, who stood by him through many of life's journeys. He was a loving father to his children, J.J. Surlas and his wife Heather of Knoxville, TN, Jason Surlas and his wife Lindsey of Knoxville, TN, and Jennifer Surlas of Ashburn, VA. His role as a grandfather brought him immense joy, and he cherished every moment with his grandchildren Jaryn, Kaiden, Nick, Chloe, Chase, Kyle, and Harper. Tom's sister, Carole Baker, and her husband Harold of McClure, will also hold dear the memory of their brother, who was a source of strength and love within the family. The family would like to give Thanks to Scott Zimmerman of Mt. Pleasant for his help and care through the last few weeks with Tom, as well as Excela Health Hospice for their care and professionalism that was shown to Tom and Linda. Tom’s family will greet friends on Thursday, January 8, 2026, from 11AM – 12:30PM at which time his Funeral Liturgy will begin with Rev.
