Steven J. Whalen, aged 58, of Connellsville, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully of natural causes on December 7, 2023. Known affectionately as Steven to his friends and family, he was a cherished father, brother, uncle, and friend who brought joy and kindness to all who knew him.
Born on August 27, 1965, Steven grew up in Connellsville, where he later became a beloved figure in the community. As a proud graduate of Mt. Pleasant High School, Class of 1983, he also attended Geibel Catholic High School he carried the lessons learned and friendships made throughout his life. Furthering his education, Steven also attended classes at Westmoreland County Community College, always eager to learn and grow.
Steven's professional life was marked by his tenure as an assemblyman for Sony Corp. in New Stanton, where he was known for his dedication and hard work. His colleagues will remember him not only for his commitment to his job but also for the warmth and camaraderie he brought to the workplace.
A man of many talents, Steven had a passion for painting and woodworking, often surprising friends and family with his intricate creations. His skill as a handyman was well-known in the neighborhood, where he would generously mow lawns and lend a helping hand wherever needed. His acts of kindness were a testament to his generous spirit and his belief in the importance of community.
One of Steven's most treasured traditions was the Christmas season. He found joy in dressing as Santa Claus, delighting children and adults alike with his festive spirit. In his front yard, a beautiful Creche, designed and built by Steven himself, stood as a symbol of his love for the holiday and his creative talents.
Steven's memory will be cherished by his loving daughter, Tabitha Whalen; his sister, Kathleen M. Gearing and her husband Joseph of Latrobe; his brothers, Michael A. Whalen of Raleigh, N.C., and Eric C. Whalen and his wife Kimberly of Jeannette. His sister, Liane C. Whalen-Chang and her husband Peter of Burke, Va.; His sister Melanie R. Rua and her husband Michael of Smithfield. His legacy will also live on through his eight nieces, nine nephews, four great-nieces, and eight great-nephews, who will miss their uncle deeply. Steven's best friend, Jeffry A. Melego of Everett, Wash., will forever remember the special bond they shared, as he was not only Steven's confidant but also the godfather to Tabitha.
Preceding him in death were his beloved wife, Teresa M. Pikovsky Whalen; his mother, Beatrice Kiliany Whalen; his brothers, John J. Whalen and David Paul Whalen; and his nephew, David M. Whalen. Their memories remain a guiding light for all who were part of Steven's life.
Steven's passing leaves a void in the hearts of those who knew him, but his legacy of kindness, creativity, and community service will continue to inspire. He lived his life with a generous heart, a warm smile, and an unwavering commitment to his loved ones. As we say farewell to Steven J. Whalen, we celebrate a life well-lived and a man dearly loved. His spirit will be fondly remembered and deeply missed.
Steven’s family will greet friends Sunday, December 10, 2023 from 2 -4PM & 6- 8PM, in the Frank Kapr Funeral Home, Inc. 417 Pittsburgh St. Scottdale, Pa. 15683.
Transfer of Prayers will be held Monday, December 11, 2023 at 10:30AM in the Funeral Home, with his Funeral Mass to follow in the Partner Parish of St. John the Baptist R.C. Church, Scottdale, with Rev. Elmer A. Alforque as Celebrant.
The Funeral Home doors will be locked between visiting hours.
