Shirley Kern Obituary

Shirley M. Van Dyke Kern, a cherished mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully from natural causes on Tuesday afternoon, April 23, 2024. Born on April 29, 1942, the daughter of the late Marion and Viola Truswell Van Dyke in Yukon, Pennsylvania, Shirley's life was a testament to the enduring strength of love and family. Shirley enjoyed the simple joys of spending time with her family and playing softball in her younger years. Her love for competition and camaraderie, lead her to become an active participant in bowling leagues where she made lasting friendships and memories. In her personal life, Shirley was the heart of her family. She leaves behind a legacy of kindness and dedication in her children: Robert M. Kern and wife Renee of Ohio, Howard "Bud" Kern of Latrobe, William J. Kern of Mt. Pleasant, and Terry L. Kern and wife Margie of Mt. Pleasant. Her grandchildren, Melissa Kern, Laura Kern, Amber Richter and her husband Wayne, Robert Kern and his wife Ashley, Chelsea Kern, and Cody Kern. And a number of Great Grandchildren. Shirley's life was framed by the love of her family, including her siblings Howard Van Dyke of Uniontown, Robert Van Dyke and wife Ruth Ann of Tarrs, Kurt Van Dyke of Greensburg, Elizabeth Garland of Mt. Pleasant Twp., and Linda Van Dyke of Uniontown. Though Shirley has now rejoined her beloved husband, Robert Melburn Kern, who preceded her in death on November 30, 2020, and her children Richard and Debbie Kern, both in infancy, her presence remains a comforting embrace to all who knew her. Her siblings Marion, Jr., Harry, James, Sarah Sumey, and Gertrude McVicar, who have passed before her, now welcome Shirley to a family reunion of eternal love and peace. Shirley’s cremation arrangements have been entrusted to the FRANK KAPR FUNERAL HOME, INC. 417 Pittsburgh St. Scottdale, Pa. 15683.
