Nicholas "Nick" Ritz, Jr.,90, a cherished educator, devoted family man, passed away peacefully on May 14, 2025, in Scottdale, Pennsylvania the son of the late Nicholas, Sr. and Kathryn Edna McCreadie Ritz. Born on November 24, 1934, in Clearfield, Pennsylvania, Nick lived a life marked by dedication to his country, his students, his community and his loved ones. He was a longtime and faithful member of the Center Bethel Church of God, Alverton. Nick's early years were characterized by a strong sense of duty and service. After bravely serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War from 1954 to 1957, he continued his commitment to the nation by joining the Naval Reserves, where he served until 1961, achieving the rank of Petty Officer 2nd Class. His time in the military instilled in him values of discipline and honor that he carried throughout his life. Following his military service, Nick pursued higher education with vigor, becoming a proud alumnus of California State University in 1962 and later of Penn State University. His passion for education led him to a fulfilling career as a special education instructor with Westmoreland Intermediate #7, where he made an indelible impact on the lives of countless students over 34 years. Nick's love for his community was unwavering. He was a 32nd degree member of Marion Lodge #762 and served the Selective Service Base in McKeesport for over two decades. His dedication to public service was further evidenced by his role as a Charter member of the East Huntingdon Fire Department, where he served for over 65 years, and his tenure as a Township Auditor, a position he held from 1960 to 2017. His involvement with the Pennsylvania State Education Association and the National Education Association reflected his deep commitment to the field of education and the betterment of his fellow educators. Family was the cornerstone of Nick's life. He was a loving father to Jeffery A. Ritz of Mt. Pleasant, Jana L. Rago and her husband Vincent of California, and Jolene L. Cummings of Mt. Pleasant as well as the late Jerald A. Ritz (1983). His wisdom and passion for life were an inspiration to his grandchildren, Andrew Ritz and Tara Ritz, Kaylee, Julia, and Austin Cummins, and Philip and Elise Rago, who will carry his legacy forward with pride. He was also a beloved brother to John T. Ritz and his wife Shirley of Mt. Pleasant, with whom he shared a lifelong bond. In addition to his parents, Nick was preceded in death by: Wife, Catherine L. Quartz Ritz (February 26, 2025) Son: Jerald A. Ritz (1983) Son-In-Law: Joesph H. Cummins (2016) Daughter-in-law: Neva D. Ritz (2023) In honoring Nick’s wishes, there will be no visitation. A Memorial Service will be held at a later time at the convenience of the family. Nick’s Cremation Arrangements have been entrusted to the Frank Kapr Funeral Home, Inc. 417 Pittsburgh St. Scottdale, Pa. 15683. In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to the Cummins Crew Foundation. This foundation supports children who have lost a parent tragically by providing financial assistance for education.
