Martha Teressa Sarko Sikon, 96 died at her home in the Woodcrest Senior Living Community in Scottdale, PA on Saturday, October 2. Martha was born on September 13, 1925 in Connellsville, PA, a daughter of the late John and Julia Levai Sarko and was the eighth and last surviving child of her parents. On May 18, 1946 she married Valentine W. Sikon in the former St. Emory’s Church in Connellsville, PA.
Martha graduated from Connellsville High School with the Class of 1942.
In 1996, she retired from Upper Tyrone Township, where she served as the Township Secretary for 18 years. She also retired from the Southmoreland School District as a teacher’s assistant where she was employed for 10 years.
After marrying, Martha and her husband Val lived in Everson for a few years before building their home on Montgomery Road in Scottdale, where she lived for over 60 years before moving to Woodcrest. She was a long and faithful member of St. Joseph’s Church in Everson, PA and a longtime member of the former St. Joseph’s Rosary Society. She was an avid reader and gardener who spent many hours each day tending to her splendid vegetable and flower gardens at her home on Montgomery Road in Scottdale. She and her husband Val were also longtime members of the Pleasant Valley Country Club. She was a faithful Pittsburgh Pirates fan and followed all their games religiously and enjoyed discussing the details of the games with her children and friends. As recently as a month ago, she enjoyed watching a Pirate’s game with her children just prior to celebrating her 96th birthday. She was a lover of animals, and in particular her cat Benji, who faithfully stayed by her side throughout her entire stay at Woodcrest.
She is survived by her two sons, Laurence Sikon and his wife Beatrice of New York City; Richard Sikon and his wife Lisa of Pittsburgh; one daughter, Cheryl Beatty and her husband David of Queen Creek, Arizona; two grandchildren, Nicholas and Kelsey Sikon; two great grandchildren, the children of Nicholas and his wife Cara Goff, Eliza and Hallie Sikon; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her husband Val in 2014; by three sisters, Marry Parr, Elizabeth Balazs and Emma Soucy; and four brothers, Michael, John, Joseph and Thomas Sarko.
Martha’s family will greet friends Wednesday from 4PM – 8PM in the Frank Kapr Funeral Home, Inc. 417 Pittsburgh St. Scottdale, Pa. 15683.
Parting Prayers will be held Thursday at 9:30AM in the Funeral Home with her Funeral Mass to follow in the Partner Parish St. Joseph R.C. Church, Everson with Fr. Michael Sikon and Fr. Elmer Alforque.
Committal Services and Interment will follow in St. Joseph Parish Cemetery, Everson.
