James R. ("Rich") Shaffer, Sr.

James R. “Rich” Shaffer, Sr., 89, of Broadford Rd. (Owensdale) Connellsville, died Sunday, August 7, 2022 in Excela Health Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant, while being comforted by his loving family.

He was born February 5, 1933 in Everson, Pa the son of the late John Shaffer and Mary Jane Chambers.

Rich was a longtime and faithful member of the Partner Parish of St. John the Baptist R.C. Church, Scottdale.

He was a retired Welder for Frank Irey & M & K construction of Monongahela with 30 years of service.

Rich enjoyed spending time with his family, taking long drives thru the country with his daughter Evelyn and listening to Polkas.

He was a member of the Mine Workers Union, former Scottdale Eagles and a member of the Everson V.F.W. Post 595. Rich was the oldest surviving member of the V.F.W. Post 595 of Everson.

Rich was a proud Veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean War from 1953 - 1955 while obtaining the rank as Sgt. He served in Germany with 1014th H/S Company Engineering Battalion. He was the recipient of the Occupational Medal of Germany and the National Defense Service Medal.

Rich is gone from our lives, but will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him,

Family and Friends are cordially invited to greet friends in the Frank Kapr Funeral Home, Inc. 417 Pittsburgh St. Scottdale, Pa. 15683 on Wednesday, August 10, 2022 from 6PM – 8PM and Thursday, August 11, 2022 from 2 – 4PM & 6 – 8PM.

Prayers of Transfer will be held Friday at 10:30AM in the Funeral Home, followed by his Funeral Mass to be held at 11AM in the Partner Parish of St. John the Baptist R.C. Church, Scottdale, with his Pastor Rev. Elmer Alforque as Celebrant.

Committal Services and Interment will follow in St. John Parish Cemetery, Scottdale with Full Military Honors accorded at the gravesite by the Scottdale Everson Honor Guard.
