James F. Miller, Sr., affectionately known as Jim to his friends and loved ones, passed away on January 3, 2024, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with his loving family at his side. Born in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, on March 30, 1961, to Anna C. Sechrist of Dawson and the late John W. Miller, Sr., Jim's life was a testament to his loving, generous, and selfless nature.
Jim shared a beautiful life with his beloved wife, Coleen A. Galley Miller of Everson, whom he married on May 5, 1984. Together, they built a family filled with love and laughter. His children, Becky Graft and her husband Scott of Tarrs, Jenny Vaculik and her husband Mikey of Everson, and Jimmy Miller of Everson, were his pride and joy. His grandchildren, Scott Graft, Jr., Hunter and Logan Graft of Tarrs, and Leanna & Michael Vaculik of Everson, knew him as Pappy, a title he cherished deeply.
Jim was a central figure within his family, which included his mother, Anna, his sister Kathy A. Stone of Dawson, and his brother John W. Miller, Jr. and wife Pam of Dawson. He was preceded in death by his father, John W. Miller, Sr., and his two brothers, Douglas E. Miller and Henry L. Miller.
A proud graduate of Frazier Class of 1981, Jim dedicated 35 years of service as a Foreman with Penn Dot. His commitment to his community was further exemplified by his active involvement with the Scottdale Fire Department, Company #2 Station, where he recently received a 20-year service pin. Within the department, he served dutifully as Secretary with his Company and was also a familiar voice at the Firemen's Club, where he called Bingo for numerous years.
Following his retirement, Jim pursued his entrepreneurial spirit and opened Miller's Pizza of Everson in 2017. As Owner and Operator, he, alongside his family, served the Everson community and its surroundings with a warm smile and delicious pizza. His establishment quickly became a local favorite, a place where friends and families gathered, and memories were made.
Jim's commitment to firefighting extended beyond the local level as he was a member of both the Westmoreland Firemen's Association and the State Firemen's Association. His dedication to these organizations reflected his unwavering spirit of service and his desire to contribute to the greater good.
In his leisure time, Jim had a passion for singing karaoke, especially with his son, Jimmy, which brought joy to all who had the pleasure of listening. Above all, he valued spending quality time with his family. Whether it was a quiet evening at home or a lively family gathering, Jim's presence was always a source of comfort and happiness.
Jim was a towering figure not only in stature but also in heart. He was a loving son, a devoted husband, a caring father, an adored Pappy, and a supportive brother. To his friends and the many lives he touched, Jim was a beacon of kindness and generosity.
The loss of James F. Miller, Sr. is deeply felt by his family, friends, and all who knew him. His legacy of love, service, and community will live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind. Jim's life was a beautiful melody composed of good deeds, laughter, and an unending capacity to give. His memory will continue to inspire and guide us, just as the warmth of his spirit will forever remain a comforting embrace.
