James Hill Obituary

James Russel “Chummer” Hill, 72, of Scottdale, passed away unexpectedly and suddenly on Thursday, September 12, 2024, in Independent Health System, Frick Hospital, Mt. Pleasant, Pa. Born on September 19, 1951, in McKeesport, Pa. the son of the late Robert Edgar and Elinor T. Dran Hill. James was a man whose life was characterized by his love for his family, his dedication to his work, and his passion for history and the arts. A proud graduate of Norwin High School, Class of 1969, James left an indelible mark as the spirited school Mascot representing the Norwin Knights, a role that showcased his school spirit and sense of community. James was a Master Machinist and was the esteemed Owner and Operator of J. Russel Tooling and Calumet Machine Company for over 50 years, where he was respected for his expertise and ingenuity in the field. Since 1970, James was a dedicated resident of Scottdale. His business acumen extended into real estate, where he was a Proprietor of various prominent properties throughout Scottdale. His entrepreneurial spirit was matched by his exquisite taste, as evidenced by his role as the Historic Consultant and decorator of the Graystone Manor, alongside his sister Pat. Together, they brought the past to life with their meticulous attention to detail and reverence for historical accuracy. James's love for antiques, fine arts, and history was not just a hobby, but a way of life. He was an avid collector with a special interest in Military Armor Suits and Uniforms, which were proudly displayed in his properties. His collections were a testament to his appreciation for the stories and craftsmanship of bygone eras. Among James's many adventures, one of the most memorable was his travel to the Vatican, where he had the honor of meeting Pope John Paul II. Dressed in his First Battalion Mess Uniform from the Queen Victoria Era, James caught the attention of the Pope, who reached out to touch and Bless him—an encounter that James would cherish for the rest of his life. James's generosity knew no bounds. He was a loving and selfless individual who always put the needs of others before his own. His kind heart and giving nature were felt by all who had the privilege to know him. He leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness, as well as a family who adored him. James is survived by his siblings, Robert A. Hill and wife Mavis of Mt. Pleasant, Judith Faye Olman and husband Melvin of Hollywood, Fla., Jeffrey N. Hill and wife Susan of Irwin, Patricia J. Hill of Scottdale, and Pamela Hill Soforic and Scott Solomon of Scottdale. His half siblings, Carol Gettelman of Ft.Myers, Fla. and Marilyn Lanzana of Kissimmee, Fla.
