Gregory A. Helkowski, Sr., R.N., a trailblazer in emergency medical care, dedicated volunteer and beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on November 21, 2024, at Redstone Highlands, at the age of 68. Born on July 24, 1956, in Mt. Pleasant, the son of the late Daniel S., Sr. and Sara J. Livingston Helkowski. Greg lived a life marked by kindness, love, and selfless devotion to his family and community. Greg devoted his life to saving and improving the lives of others. He was among the first Pennsylvania State Certified Paramedics, a testament to his pioneering spirit and dedication to the field of emergency medicine. A proud graduate of Shadyside School of Nursing, Greg combined his education and passion to serve as a highly respected flight nurse with Stat Medevac and a paramedic with Pittsburgh EMS. His skill and kindness earned his admiration of colleagues and the gratitude of countless lives he touched. Gregory also gave back to his community as a former volunteer firefighter for the Scottdale Fire Department, where he served as Chairman of the Board. His leadership and commitment to public service extended far beyond his professional career, leaving a lasting impact on all who served alongside him. Greg leaves behind his beloved wife of 43 years, Sue Weisgerber Helkowski of Scottdale. Together, they built a family founded on love and mutual respect. His legacy continues through his children, Melissa Helkowski of Greensburg, Michelle Koury and her husband Christian of Greensburg, and Gregory Helkowski, Jr. and Samantha Phillippi of Scottdale. Greg was a proud and doting grandfather to Rylee Hart, Vivianna Koury, and Kaden Koury, who brought him endless pride and joy. Gregory’s boundless love for his family and his ability to make every moment special will forever be remembered. He is also survived by his brother, Daniel S. Helkowski, Jr. of Sewickley, and brother-in-law, Charles Schmook of Scottdale. Greg was a pillar of strength for his family, and his guidance and warmth will be deeply missed. He was preceded in death by his Parents, his sister Patricia A. "Patty" Schmook (June 1, 2004) and his brother Larry Helkowski (2019). Greg’s life was a shining example of selflessness, courage and dedication. His pioneering contributions to emergency medicine, his leadership within his community, and during his enduring love for his family will forever inspire those who knew him. His Spirit soars as freely as the flights he took to serve and protect those in need.
