Frank Greenawalt Obituary

Frank Thomas Greenawalt, March 19, 1954; age 69, of West Newton, PA, passed on Sunday, March 10, 2024, surrounded by his loving family, at home on the farm where he was raised. Frank was an amazing husband, father, brother, friend, grandfather, and great-grandfather. You might have known him as Butch, or Boo, or Cowboy, or Eddie Bonozi, or Pap. Whatever you called him, he surely treated you with kindness and encouragement. Frank met Cathy Schuster, the love of his life, playing pool in a bar in 1976, kicking off a lifetime of adventure together. He immediately loved her for her kids – Jack, Jennifer, and Janine. She loved his intelligence and good looks. They learned how to cope with loss together after the passing of their daughter Rachel, and how to rediscover joy with the birth of their daughter Laura. They would have celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on March 31 of this year. Frank started his first company, T-Soft in 1993, building a successful software career that spanned nearly three decades. His work took him all over the world, often with his Babe by his side. He always wore a cowboy hat, even during business trips across Europe, and to the embarrassment of his kids during their teenage years. He was a farmer on the weekends, maintaining the tractors and equipment so his kids could break them again. He knew how to fix just about anything, and could teach you how to, too. He was remarkably patient. Frank was funny. He loved life, but if you asked him how he was doing, he’d drawl “fair-to-middlin’” (whatever that means). He enjoyed a Stoney’s or two every night and (Wild) Turkey at Thanksgiving. No one has seen him without a mustache since 1972, but he never could grow a beard. He was a member of the Perryopolis Gun Club & Scottdale BPOE 777. He loved Willie Nelson, riding his motorcycle, and his church, Seven Dolors, where he served with the Knights of Columbus. On December 4, 2022, Frank was given a new chance at life, while at church one Sunday. After more than 18 months waiting on the heart transplant list, he got the call that a donor was found and rushed to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. The transplant was successful, but, for reasons the Lord might make clear one day, he faced many complications afterward. The past 15 months have been impossibly hard for him, and for our whole family. We’re glad that he’s at peace now, and miss him terribly. We are grateful for the support of dozens of wonderful medical experts, kind hospital staff at AGH, hospice team at Allegheny Healthy Network, therapists and care teams from Amedisys, and our community of family and friends. The heart was perfect up until the end, and we’re grateful to our donor and their family, and to CORE for helping us take this chance. Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Ann and Frank C. Greenawalt; daughter, Rachel Ann; and sister, Marsha Squires. He is survived by his wife Cathy (Schuster) Greenawalt and their children, Jack Fedorek, Jennifer (Craig) Squires, Janine (Don) Strauser, and Laura (Jack Fordyce) Greenawalt. He had seven grandkids, Sean (Nikki) Fedorek; John, Michael, and Gracie Fedorek; Adam, Allie & Dr. Abigail Squires; and four great-grandkids, Mathew Thomas and Madalynn Marie Fedorek; Lacey Rose and Vivian Louise Squires. His siblings Frances (Glen) Geisel, Paulette (Rocky) Komarny, Suzie Powell, Janet (Andy) Dulina, Sally (Jeff) Buszinski, Mary Ann (Charlie) Janiro, and Larry (Diane) Greenawalt can attest to his lifelong work ethic and love for his homeplace. Frank’s family will greet friends in the FRANK KAPR FUNERAL HOME, INC. 417 Pittsburgh St. Scottdale, Pa. 15683 on Friday, March 15, 2024 from 2 – 4PM & 6- 8PM.
